Reggae, The Message in the Groove

Reggae is deceptively gentle. Underneath that laid-back, off-beat skank is some of the most pointed, soulful and spiritually serious songwriting in popular music. It can soothe you and challenge you in the same four bars.

One drop, deep roots

The genre built a whole vocabulary that the rest of music borrowed: the bassline as lead instrument, the space in the mix, the idea that a song could carry a conscience. Roots, dub, lovers rock, each branch keeps that core intact.

Still growing

A new generation of artists keeps reggae current, blending it with afrobeats, hip-hop and soul while holding the message at the centre. The sound is timeless precisely because it refuses to stand still.
